Travel Information

Arrival

Erlangen is a city located in Middle Franconia in the state of Bavaria, Germany. Together with the neighbor cities Nuremberg (Nürnberg) and Fürth, Erlangen constitutes an important metropolitan area within the state of Bavaria. Erlangen has more than 100.000 inhabitants, whereas the entire metropolitan area of Nuremberg encompasses 3.500.000 inhabitants on 21.300 square kilometers.

Erlangen can be reached conveniently by plane via Nuremberg Airport (NUE), or directly by train. Another possibility is to fly to either Frankfurt or Munich (München) Airport and change to a connecting train to Nuremberg or Erlangen. The cities of Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth are interconnected by an extensive public transport network.

Public transport

The public transport is operated by Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg GmbH (VGN). All kinds of helpful travel information (also in English language) you can find at

In the following, some recommendations for public transport connections are listed that might be especially useful for DAFx-14:

from NUE Airport to Nuremberg city center (and Erlangen)

If you arrive by plane at Nuremberg Airport, use subway line U2 (direction Nürnberg-Röthenbach) to travel to Nuremberg city center. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes.

Change to either suburban train line S1 or to train line R2 (direction Forchheim/Bamberg) to go to Erlangen city center. The journey takes approximately another 20-30 minutes.

Caution: Due to construction work the suburban train line S1 does not operate between Fuerth and Erlangen. There is a rail replacement bus service, but you have to change to or from the bus and travel takes much longer. We advise to use the R2 train line.

Alternatively, connect via tram line 4 (direction Nürnberg-Thon) to bus line 30 that finally brings you from Nürnberg-Thon to Erlangen city center via Erlangen-Tennenlohe. The latter connection is only recommended if you plan to travel directly from Nuremberg to the conference venues at Fraunhofer IIS or the FAU campus or your hotel nearby.

The most convenient connection is using suburban train line S1 or train line R2 (direction Nürnberg/Hersbruck). In both cities, departure/arrival is at the main train station. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes.

There are several regular bus services to the campus from the city centre (bus lines 287 and 293 [bus stop "Techn. Fakultät"] or bus lines 30 and 295 [bus stop "Erlangen/Süd"]). The journey takes approximately 20 minutes.

from Erlangen city center via FAU campus to Fraunhofer IIS

The bus line 295 also further connects to Fraunhofer IIS after a ride of another 5 minutes [bus stop "Brückleinsgasse"] right in front of Fraunhofer IIS. Bus line 30 also further connects to Fraunhofer IIS [bus stop "Wetterkreuz"], from where you can directly walk (10 min) to Fraunhofer IIS or change to bus line 295.

Use tram line 4 to go to Nürnberg-Thon. The bus line 30 directly connects Nürnberg [bus stop "Nürnberg Thon"] with Erlangen FAU campus [bus stop "Erlangen/Süd"].

If you get off the bus a few stops earlier [bus stop "Wetterkreuz"] you can directly walk (10 min) to Fraunhofer IIS, or change to bus line 295 which brings you right in front of the IIS building [bus stop "Brückleinsgasse"].

Accommodation/Hotels

Erlangen and Nürnberg are located in very close proximity to each other. In terms of accommodation and public transport this means that it's basically up to your choice where you decide to stay during DAFx-14. Either you prefer to stay in the rather small but beautiful city of Erlangen, or your choice is the regional metropolis Nürnberg offering a rich and world-known historical heritage. Alternatively, if you prefer to stay in close proximity to the conference venues, Erlangen-Tennenlohe might be your choice.
